Blue Raiders Survive Late Push, Defeat Wichita State 46–45

WICHITA, Kan. — Middle Tennessee (5-7,0-0 CUSA) concludes non-conference play with a win over Wichita State (3-10, 0-0 AC).
The Blue Raiders began the game with a back-and-forth scoring exchange, with each team holding a maximum lead of two points. MTSU trailed by one point at halftime, with a score of 20-19.
In the third quarter, MTSU's Savannah Davis hit consecutive three-pointers, allowing the team to extend their lead to 25-20 with 8:24 remaining. Freshman Blair Baugus scored a second-chance jumper in the paint following an opponent's turnover at 5:16, bringing the score to 29-22. Baugus then made a turnaround jumper, and at 2:58, guard Yu Han Lin scored a driving layup on a fast break after another turnover by Wichita State, extending the lead to 33-25. Then Davis hit another to extend the lead 45-33 for MTSU, their largest lead of the game but in the 4th quarter the Shockers went on a 12-1 run over 4:21 cuts MTSU's lead 46-45.
With 00:38 remaining in the 4th quarter, freshman Macie Phifer blocked a jumper by Jaida McDonald, which sealed the game. Davis tallied 10 points and 6 rebounds, Baugus recorded 8 points and 12 rebounds, and Phifer recorded 8 pts, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.
Coach's Comments
We outrebounded them 40–33. Again, we won the rebounding battle. We kept their best players from touching the ball, and I'm happier about that than anything. We got points in the paint, and Davis did touch the ball. Every time she got a look, she scored.
