DALLAS – Another standout week from redshirt sophomore Torey Alston saw him voted as Conference USA Player of the Week for the week of December 22, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. The award marks the second of the year for the Durham, N.C. native and the second time a Blue Raider has earned the honor this season.
Alston averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds on the week, helping lead the Blue Raiders to wins over Kennesaw State and Cumberland. Against the Owls, he scored 10 points, eight of them coming from the free throw line after drawing seven fouls. Coming just short of a double-double with nine rebounds, he set a new career best with six blocks, marking the best blocking performance by a Conference USA player this season.
In Sunday's contest against Cumberland, the forward tallied his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 60 percent from the field while making seven free throws and tacking on three blocks and two assists. Perhaps his most notable stretch in the game saw him score the opening nine points of the second half in just two minutes of play to push the Blue Raiders to victory in their last non-conference contest at home.
Alston leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game, a mark that is tied for second in the conference and is second on the team with 12.5 points per game.
