MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (3-0-1) played to a 2-2 draw with Indiana State (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon in the first all-time meeting between the programs.
The Blue Raiders are unbeaten through four straight matches for the first time since the 2006 season.
At the 20:09 mark, senior forward Emma Pettersen put Middle Tennessee ahead with a goal assisted by senior forward Taijah Fraser. Indiana State answered just before halftime, as Anna Chor scored with eight seconds remaining off an assist from Brooklyn Woods.
The Sycamores took the lead in the 55th minute after earning a penalty kick, which Woods converted to make it 2-1.
In the 75th minute, freshman midfielder Mya Stenehjem tied the match at 2-2, netting her first collegiate goal on a header assisted by Pettersen off a set piece. The Blue Raiders recorded six shots on goal; two each from Pettersen and junior midfielder Hannah Murphy, and one apiece from Fraser and Stenehjem.
Coach Aston Rhoden on the team's performance:
"We played a very good first half and had a mental lapse with just 10 seconds to go, then gave up a second goal on a set piece. But the fact that the team continued to believe and continued to play, we didn't deviate from how we wanted to play that put us in a great position to win the game late."
Stenehjem on her equalizer:
"We fought hard. I mean, we grew as a team today. We honestly dominated the game, but it just came down to scoring. But we played well, we grew. That's all we can ask for."
By the numbers:
Stenehjem became the fourth Blue Raider freshman to score this season, joining Olivia Best, Alli Craig and Scottie Newton.
Up next:
Middle Tennessee travels to Mobile, Ala., for a match up with South Alabama on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. CT at The Cage.
