MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee (8-5, 2-0 CUSA) rang in the new year by seeing grad student Alec Oglesby, who hit a career-high eight three-pointers, the second most in program history in a single game, to lead the Blue Raiders to a program record 22 threes as a team in a 88-51 win over the LA Tech Bulldogs (8-5, 1-1 CUSA). Oglesby finished with a career-high 25 points with a career-high eight field goals made, contributing to a 50 percent three-point shooting percentage for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee got off to a blazing start from deep, shooting 6-of-10 from deep to get out to a 24-10 lead at the midway point of the first half. Both Kamari Lands and Ogelsby led the team with six points, both coming on a pair of threes, each. Tre Green and Jahvin Carter both had a three at that point, as well. Middle Tennessee had forced five early turnovers out of Louisiana Tech, leading to an 8-0 margin in points off turnovers.
The Blue Raiders hit nine first-half threes, the most in a half this season to take a 39-22 advantage into the locker room. Oglesby tied his season high with four to lead Middle Tennessee with 12 points in the first half. Green had eight points in nine minutes off the bench. Lands had six points to go with four rebounds and two assists while Torey Alston had six points and four rebounds, including a dunk at the buzzer to put the Blue Raiders on top by 17 at the half. As a team, the Blue Raiders were plus-five in rebounding, plus-five in assists and plus-eight in points off turnovers at the break.
Green also had a record-setting night, tying his career high with six three-pointers and setting a career high with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Lands finished with 11 points and five rebounds; Carter had nine points with four assists and Luka Jovanovic grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. Marcus Whitlock Jr. came in at the end of the night and drilled two threes to give him a season-high six points. The 88 points were the most the Bulldogs have allowed in a game this season for the number one scoring defense in the country coming into the evening.
Defensively, Middle Tennessee's 51 points allowed were the lowest to a conference foe since January 15, 2022 in a 50-39 win over FIU. The Blue Raiders generated 16 points off turnovers and had eight steals with three blocks while holding the Bulldogs to just 39 percent from the floor.
Nick McDevitt
"Anytime you can shoot and make 22 threes on 50% from the floor, you shot it well," said Middle Tennessee Head Coach Nick McDevitt. "What I really liked was how engaged we stayed on the defensive end of the floor, that's what really gave us some energy. The way we shared the ball was awesome. We took 44 threes, and not too many were contested, and we had 22 assists on 32 made baskets with just seven turnovers. Anytime you beat a team like LA Tech how we did tonight, a lot has to go well, and a lot did go well."
Alec Oglesby
"I want to take time to glorify God in this instance," Ogelsby said. "I've come a long way and God brought me here to put me with these coaches and my teammates. I think Coach (McDevitt) instills that confidence in us every day. He tells us 'if you're open, shoot it.' It's infectious that we have so many great shooters on this team. Tre (Green) hit six, Kemari (Lands) hit a couple and so did MJ (Whitlock). We just have a really great team and some great shooters."
