MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- Middle Tennessee baseball senior catcher Tyler Minnick has been named the winner of Conference USA's Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced on Tuesday. The award honors student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, good academic standing and participation in their sport.
This follows up a standout season on and off the diamond for Minnick. The Smyrna, Georgia product led Blue Raider baseball's effort in giving back to the community. This includes time spent volunteering with Special Olympics Tennessee at various events, hosting Murfreesboro Miracle League at Reese Smith Jr. Field and leading the charge on Reading in Schools Day with a visit to John Pittard Elementary School.
Minnick continued to shine in the classroom as well, earning his second selection to the CUSA All-Academic Team in as many years. This paired with selections to the CUSA Commissioner's Honor Roll and being a CUSA Academic Medal Recipient for the second straight year as well. Minnick's academic accolades come off the back of a 4.0 GPA in MTSU's Business Administration program.
The senior's impact on the field came in a multitude of ways as well. Minnick was named as an All-CUSA selection for his play, including a 43-game on-base streak while being top 10 in the league in RBI and doubles. The backstop was also at the top of league leaderboard in runners caught stealing, throwing out 17 would-be base stealers. Minnick's defense prowess leaves a mark in the program-record book, putting up the ninth most putouts in a single season with 461.
