Newton tabbed CUSA Defensive Player of the Week

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Sophomore defender Scottie Newton has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Newton has played all but six minutes in Middle Tennessee's first two games, leading her back line to two clean sheets and the least amount of shots faced out of any CUSA team. Even with three new defenders beside her, Newton has led MTSU to be only one of two teams in CUSA to not concede a goal in its first two matches.
The center back has also displayed considerable offensive threat with her well-placed header assist for the Blue Raiders' second goal against Southern Indiana and her four shots through two games that rank T-10th out of any player in CUSA.
As a result of her performances, the Blue Raiders have both won and not conceded a goal in their first two matches of the season for the first time since 2015, when they both won and earned three clean sheets in their first three.
The accolade is the second in Newton's career and the first of the season after she garnered CUSA-All Freshman Team honors in 2025.
Elsewhere in CUSA, WKU forward Makenna Egan won Offensive Player of the Week and WKU goalkeeper Mia Riddick won Goalkeeper of the Week.
Middle Tennessee will continue its three-match road trip on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. against in-state opposition UT Martin, before concluding its travels at West Georgia on Sunday, Aug. 23 at noon.
