Volleyball Drops Tight, Five Set Contest to Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee volleyball team dropped their weekend closer at the Belmont Invitational to the hosting Bruins 3-2 Sunday at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.
The match was the second of MTSU's (4-2) season to go five sets, the previous being Aug. 29 versus UNC Asheville.
Michaela Dlouhá recorded her career-high in kills with 17 on the day, beating her previous mark of 16. Dlouhá led the team in kills on the day, followed by Sophia Henry with 16 and Gabrielle Clinkscale with 14.
Marianne Garcia continued her defensive momentum, picking up 27 digs to lead the Blue Raiders. She also had a career-high three aces.
Jaslyn Reed posted career highs in kills (13), attacks (30) and total block assists (3). Reed played all five sets and was an offensive presence throughout the match.
Each set on the day was tightly contested, with all five being decided by three or less points.
Middle Tennessee won the first set 25-22, holding off a Belmont (2-4) 5-0 rally to make it 24-22 at the end of the set. Reed collected the set-winning kill to put the Blue Raiders up 1-0.
The Bruins tied up the match after winning the second set, which had 11 deadlocks before Belmont pulled away for the high-scoring 30-28 set win.
Keeping the momentum, the Bruins held off MTSU for a 29-17 set three win to go up 2-1 in the match.
Needing a set win to keep the match alive, the Blue Raiders got just that, winning the fourth set 25-23. Henry collected the set-winning kill.
A 10-4 start to the fifth set proved to be enough for Belmont to find victory as the Bruins shut the door and defeated Middle Tennessee 15-10 to win the match 3-2.

--MTSU fell to 4-3 all-time versus Belmont.
--Middle Tennessee holds a 4-2 record through six games for the second consecutive season.
