Larry Maples joined the MTSU Athletics Department as an Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment Operations in 2016 and was later named the Associate Athletic Director for Equipment and Capital Projects in 2020.
Maples is currently dedicating a majority of his time to the Blue Raiders’ Build Blue $100 million facility project, which will totally transform the athletic complex. Phase 1 – Student Athlete Performance Center, Phase 2 – Murphy Center Enhancements, and Phase 3 – Multi-Purpose Indoor Practice Facility. He also spearheaded the development of the $8 million outdoor tennis complex, which opened in spring 2024.
Additionally, he acts as chief liaison to multiple campus entities. Throughout his career, he has spearheaded efforts for a multitude of championships at both the conference and NCAA level.
Prior to the 2019-20 academic year, Maples spent the previous three seasons with the Blue Raiders as the Assistant AD for equipment operations, overseeing the equipment ordering for all athletic teams at Middle Tennessee, handling the logistics for all road games, and preparing the practice facility and his staff for all Blue Raider football practices.
Maples was named the Jeff Boss District IV Equipment Manager of the Year in 2017 and 2020, and has also served on the Athletic Council for United Sports Brands. Maples is also a 2018-19 Sports Management Institute Executive Program participant and was a part of the 2020 Top Connect AD Inaugural class.
In his facility role, Maples has led $14,225,000 in capital maintenance and upgrade projects. He helped steer new videoboards for football, basketball, baseball and softball ($5,525,000), new softball grandstands ($500,000), an upgraded volleyball court ($200,000) and the new outdoor tennis complex ($8M).
The Memphis, Tenn., native made his way to Murfreesboro in 2016 after spending the previous year as a supply chain engineer for Mueller Industries. Maples, who is a member of the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council, has also worked as an industrial engineer for Electrolux Home Cooking Products. In January 2024, Maples received a Diamond Award Excellence in Higher Education Leadership Philanthropic, Humanitarian & Community Engagement.
From 2013 to 2014, Maples served as the assistant equipment manager for the Blue Raiders where he helped coordinate all the day-to-day operations. He also assisted in the design and ordering of new Nike Pro Combat apparel while coordinating the logistics for all road games.
Maples, who is married to the former Carmen Merritt, earned his undergraduate degree from Middle Tennessee in Engineering Technologies (2013). The couple has a daughter, Chloe, who is 5 years old.
