Men Picked to Win, Women Second at SBC Outdoors

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Middle Tennessee Blue Raider track team was picked to win the Sun Belt title at the league championships this weekend in Denton, Texas, in a vote of the coaches released Thursday by the conference office.
The Blue Raiders, who finished second at last year's meet and last won the Sun Belt Outdoor title in 2001, picked up seven of the nine first-place votes on the men's side and 77 total points. Last year's champion, Western Kentucky, got the other two first-place votes and tallied 69 points for second place.
Louisiana-Lafayette was third with 60 points, followed by Arkansas State (53), host North Texas (48), South Alabama (37), Arkansas-Little Rock (28), Florida International (17) and New Orleans (16).
On the women's side, host North Texas got four first-place votes and 92 points for first place, followed by the Lady Raiders with four first-place votes and 81 total points.
The Lady Raiders finished fifth last year, while North Texas won last year's meet on their home track, Fouts Field.
Western Kentucky was third on the women's side with 75 points, while New Mexico State received the two remaining first-place votes and tallied 71 points. South Alabama was fifth with 62 points, followed by Florida International (50), Louisiana-Lafayette (39), Arkansas State (37), New Orleans (18) and Arkansas-Little Rock (15).
The 2004 Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships sponsored by TGIFriday's begins Friday with the heptathlon and decathlon. Meet results may be accessed at unt.edu/athletics or sunbeltsports.org. The championships conclude Sunday evening.
