TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Middle Tennessee's Kishara George opened the outdoor track season in style by winning the 400m hurdles at the Alabama Relays Saturday.
George, the reigning Sun Belt Outdoor Champion in the 400m hurdles, clocked in a time of 1:00.26 to win the title. She blew away her closest competition, UAB's Adrienne Duke, who was a full two seconds behind her in the race.
"Kishara came out of the blocks like a bullet," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "It was the fourth fastest time of her career and she did a good job considering the chilly conditions."
Middle Tennessee also got a strong performance from junior sprinter Van Fraley who placed second in the 100m. Fraley clocked in a time of 10.61 in his first outdoor meet for the Blue Raiders.
"Van had a good start to the race," Hayes said. "He had a good performance for his first outdoor meet."
Junior Linnie Yarbrough also clocked in a solid performance in the 400m hurdles. Yarbrough placed second in the event with a personal best time of 53.09.
"Linnie ran the race really well," Hayes said. "He was solid to start the race and finished strong, but has to work on his focus in the middle of the race."
Newcomer Mamadu Kone clinched a third place finish for the Blue Raiders in the 800m. Kone clocked in a time of 1:55.49 in the event.
In the field events, Middle Tennessee picked up a solid performance from senior thrower Lindsay Sims who placed second in the javelin. Sims launched a mark of 189-07.
In the women's shot put, senior Laetitia Florimond placed fourth for the Lady Raiders. She heaved a mark of 45-08.50 in her first outdoor meet of the season.
Middle Tennessee returns to the Alabama Relays on Sunday for the completion of the meet. Events scheduled include the relays and various field events.
