MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee freshman William Songock continues his season this weekend at the NCAA South Regional in Maryville, Tenn., the qualifying event for the NCAA Championships.
Songock participated in three events this fall for the Blue Raiders after arriving in early September, placing second twice and then finishing seventh at the Sun Belt Championships two weeks ago in Little Rock, Ark., earning All-SBC honors and also being named SBC Freshman of the Year.
Songock's mark of 25:13.94 for 8K at the Greater Louisville Classic on September 30 was the fastest 8K time run by a Blue Raider since Geoffrey Lagat's winning mark at the 2000 Sun Belt Championships. Songock also posted a 5K time of 15:22 at the FrontRunner Invitational on October 14, faster than any 5K time ever run by Lagat in his Middle Tennessee career.
At the SBC Championships, the Moiben, Kenya, native bested his previous 8K time by more than four seconds (25:09.62), bettered in the last seven years only by Lagat's winning time of 25:07 in winning the 2000 conference championships.
Saturday's event will be a first for Songock at Middle Tennessee, competing on a 10K course at the Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville. Race time for the men is 11 a.m. ET and results from the meet may be found at utsports.com.
"This will be a good experience for William. This is his first time in a big competition," head coach Dean Hayes said. "I don't know if he's ever run a 10K before in his life.
"This is a pretty tough course as well. It's on a golf course, but it's much more difficult than the Sun Belt [meet], which was very flat."
