MACON, Ga. - Middle Tennessee's golf team was ranked No. 8 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index ratings. The Blue Raiders will have a chance to see exactly where they stand on a national stage when they begin play in the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., this weekend.
2007 national runner-up Georgia, 2007 co-ACC champion Georgia Tech, 2007 East Regional participant Clemson and 2007 West Region champion South Carolina headline the 13-team tournament field. Also participating are Middle Tennessee, Akron, Mercer, Eastern Michigan, Furman, Gonzaga, Hartford, Kennesaw State, and Troy.
The field includes four of the top 15 ranked teams in the Golfweek ratings led by South Carolina (2), and Georgia Tech (3). Middle Tennessee is eighth and Georgia is 14th.
The 54-hole tournament begins at The Brickyard at Riverside Sunday morning and concludes with final round action Tuesday.
"It's a tournament with some outstanding teams," Middle Tennessee coach Whit Turnbow said. "We are excited to be part of the field. It's a great opportunity for our program and our players."
Middle Tennessee has played well in its first two tournaments, finishing fifth out of 17 teams at the Scenic City Invitational before breaking six team or individual marks on the way to winning the Jaguar Intercollegiate a week later; however, this weekend's test figures to be the most stern of the three to date.
The Blue Raiders are led by Chas Narramore with a 69.17 stroke average. He was named the Sun Belt's Golfer of the Month for September. Middle Tennessee has four of the Sun Belt's top 10 golfers in regard to stroke average. Narramore is second, followed by Rick Cochran (5), Kent Bulle (9), and Craig Smith (10).
Middle Tennessee's lineup this weekend includes Narramore, Cochran, Bulle, Smith, and freshman Jason Millard. Senior Nick Bailes will compete as an individual.
