MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Four Middle Tennessee cross country runners will participate Saturday at the NCAA South Regional in Gainesville, Fla., the qualifying event for the NCAA Championships on November 19.
Senior Marjorie Gombert and sophomore Zamzam Sangau will compete in the women's 6K race, while sophomore William Songock and freshman Festus Chemaoi will run in the men's 10K event at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on the University of Florida campus.
Sangau has been the women's top finisher in all six events this fall, including a first-place showing at the UTC FrontRunner Invitational on October 13 in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a third-place finish at the Sun Belt Championships two weeks ago in Bowling Green, Ky.
Gombert has also enjoyed a very good cross country season, finishing in the Top 25 in five of six events, including her sixth-place showing at the SBC meet two weeks ago.
Chemaoi has been the men's top runner in four meets this fall, including finishing as the top collegian at two events - the UTC Powerade Invitational on September 7 in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the UTC FrontRunner Invitational. The Ainabkoi, Kenya, native struggled with equipment issues at the SBC Championships and placed 11th overall.
Songock saved his best this fall for the SBC meet when the Moiben, Kenya, native finished the five mile course in eighth place for his second consecutive All-Sun Belt honor. Songock has finished in the Top 20 five times this year with a fifth-place showing at the UTC FrontRunner Invitational his best finish.
Saturday's men's race starts at 9 a.m. CT, with the women's event following at 10 a.m. Full results may be found at www.gatorzone.com.
