MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee track teams open the indoor season Saturday at Murphy Center with the four-team MT Christmas Invitational starting at 10 a.m. The Blue Raiders return 12 letterwinners on the men's side and 16 for the women.
Teams from Western Kentucky, Tennessee State and Milligan College will all be competing Saturday. Also scheduled to appear in USA Olympian triple jumper Kenta Bell.
Outdoor All-American Samuel Adade is the men's best returning sprinter, while the men have added several quality distance runners, including freshmen Festus Chemaoi and Isaac Biwott. Sophomores William Songock and Julius Kirui should also be major factors in the distance events, and brothers Carl and Carlos Morgan will help the Blue Raiders in the jumps. Junior Pete Senatus will also be strong in the hurdles.
On the women's side, All-Sun Belt performers MeLyn Thompson and Brittany Cox lead a strong group of returnees, which also includes All-Region cross country performer Zamzam Sangau. Thompson and Cox will be helped in the throws by newcomer Maite Cortin.
The women's squad also has great depth in the distance events with Marjorie Gombert, Ashley Comstock, Tiffany Sawyer, Kaitlyn Hammond, Ashleigh Thaler and Catherine Chester.
"This really gives everybodye something to shoot for and gives the kids and me a chance to see where everyone stands before they go home for Christmas," head coach Dean Hayes said. "It gives them a goal instead of just continually doing the same things over and over again in practice."
Events on Saturday begin with the weight throw at 10 a.m. and conclude with the mile relay just before 5 p.m. A full schedule of events may be found at http://www.goblueraiders.com/content.cfm/id/29033.
