MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Golf fans in Murfreesboro and throughout Rutherford County seldom have the opportunity to watch college golf, but that will change when the 11-team Middle Tennessee/Aldila Intercollegiate takes place at Old Fort Golf Course Monday and Tuesday.
The 11 teams, which include No. 35-ranked Southeast Louisiana and No. 49-ranked Middle Tennessee, will play a practice round at the par-72 course Sunday, before beginning the tournament with 36 holes Monday, and concluding with 18 holes in the final round Tuesday.
The Middle Tennessee/Aldila Intercollegiate is the first college golf tournament played in Murfreesboro in 18 years, and veteran Blue Raider coach Johnny Moore says it's a great opportunity for fans to see the team for the first time on what he believes will be a great course for tournament action.
"No one has ever really seen our team so this is a chance for people in Murfreesboro to see college golf," Moore said. "(Old Fort Golf Course) has bloomed out and it is going to be gorgeous. The greens are as good as I've ever seen them. These teams will be treated to a well-conditioned golf course."
The field includes Arkansas State, College of Charleston, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, New Orleans, Southeast Louisiana, Texas State, Troy, UALR, and Western Kentucky.
Middle Tennessee, ranked 11th in the Southeast Region, has enjoyed one of its finest springs in recent years and Middle Tennessee/Aldila Intercollegiate provides a final tune-up before the Sun Belt Conference Championships, April 16-18, in Orlando, Fla.
The Blue Raiders have compiled a 76-7 record this spring and are 114-20 overall during the 06-07 season. Middle Tennessee has finished fourth or higher in all five spring tournaments, and it has eight top 5 finishes out of 10 tournaments in 06-07. Chas Narramore leads the Blue Raiders with a 72.69 stroke average and is ranked No. 4 in the Southeast Region.
"There is no question this team is playing as good as any team I've had going down the stretch, and it is very important that we sustain the momentum we have developed. We have had seven different players who have played for us on a regular basis this season and that's healthy. We have had a different player finish as the low man every tournament this spring and that's great. We have a lot of different people stepping up and playing well."
