MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's cross country teams run in their third event in three weeks on Saturday, taking part in the 26th Annual Paul Turner Old Timers Classic at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky. The women run 5K at 10 a.m. and the men five miles at 10:45 a.m.
This will be the first of two trips for Middle Tennessee this year to Kereaikes Park. The Sun Belt Championships will take place on the course on October 27.
Sophomore Zamzam Sangau was voted Sun Belt Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after placing fourth at the UTC Powerade Invitational last Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn. Sangau ran almost two minutes faster on the Moccasin Bend Course than at the same meet last year and has a pair of finishes this season in the Top 12.
Senior Marjorie Gombert and junior Ashley Comstock have also finished in the Top 35 in both meets so far in 2007, and freshman Marla Bailey placed 25th last week at UTC in her collegiate debut.
For the men, freshman Festus Chemaoi finished second and was the top collegian two weeks ago at the Belmont Opener, while sophomore William Songock has placed in the Top 20 in both meets this season. Freshmen Julius Kirui and Isaac Biwott give the Blue Raiders a strong foursome on the men's side.
"This is the first full distance meet of the year and we'll use whomever we have," head coach Dean Hayes said. "Everyone needs to find out what the course is like. This is where the Sun Belt meet is, so they can get a feel for it."
Both teams take next week off before running in the Greater Louisville Classic on September 29 in Louisville, Ky.
