MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Amber Holt has been named a First Team All-American by CBSSports.com after leading the nation in scoring for more than half the season and helping the Blue Raiders to a 21-11 overall mark. She is the only First Team All-American in program history.
Holt is averaging 27.1 points per game heading into Middle Tennessee's WNIT contest Wednesday versus Western Carolina. She has posted a dozen 30-point games in 2007-08, a Blue Raider single-season record, and has eight double-doubles this year. The Duluth, Ga., native ranks 97th nationally in rebounds (8.1), 74th in steals per game (2.41), 53rd in field goal percentage (.516) and 93rd in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.52).
Of the 13 games nationally this season with 40-point scorers, Holt is the only player with a pair of 40-point showings. She scored 41 points in an upset of No. 8 LSU in December and broke a 21-year-old school record for points in a game with 44 at Louisiana-Monroe in January.
Holt leads the Sun Belt Conference in scoring and ranks second in FG percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio, first in steals and offensive rebounds, third in rebounding, fourth in free throws percentage, and eighth in assists. Eight of her 30-point efforts have come versus SBC competition.
She has won an unprecedented five Sun Belt Player of the Week awards and is a member of all three National Player of the Year award watch lists - the Wade Trophy, the Naismith Award and the Wooden Award. She also does it on the defensive end, drawing 58 charges in 2007-08, almost twice the number the rest of the team has combined.
The Meadowcreek High School product was named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team last week after the Blue Raiders played in their sixth straight tourney championship game. She broke four individual tournament records, including most points (88), field goals (32), field goal attempts (63) and free throws made (24).
Holt continues to rewrite the single-season record books at Middle Tennessee, setting the single-season scoring mark against Troy on March 1. She ranks first on the single-season charts in scoring average (27.1), field goals made (330), field goals attempts (639), free throws made (190), free throw attempts (242) and 30-point scoring games in a season (12). She also ranks eighth in rebounds (259) and second in double-figure scoring games (32).
Holt heads into Wednesday's contest against Western Carolina with 868 points this season, moving her into the national Top 20 for points in a season. Holt ranks 17th on the national list, only four points behind Penn State's Kelly Mazzante (872 points, 2002) and five behind Delta State's Deborah Temple (873 points, 1984). She needs 40 points to reach the Top 10 on the list.
