MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's basketball has added a dynamic scoring threat to its backcourt, as former Tennessee State combo guard Xai Whitfield has signed with the program, head coach Matt Insell announced Monday afternoon.
"We are very excited to welcome Xai to the Middle Tennessee women's basketball family," Insell said. "She is an explosive guard that can play both on and off the ball. She has great scoring ability and can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways—from the three, off the bounce, and at the rim. Not only is Xai a great basketball player, but she is an even better person and comes from a great family. We expect her to have an immediate impact on our basketball team and bring added size, strength and versatility at both the point and wing"
Whitfield, a 5-foot-9 combo guard from Oxford, Alabama, joins the Blue Raiders after spending two seasons at Tennessee State, where she appeared in 56 games with 17 starts, averaging 7.6 points, 2.4 rebounds per game, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from beyond the arc.
During the 2025–26 campaign at TSU, Whitfield appeared in 26 games with 16 starts, averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She shot 41.6 percent from the field, including an impressive 48 percent from beyond the arc, while converting 76.6 percent from the free throw line. Whitfield reached double figures in scoring in 10 games and recorded a career-high 22 points against Southeast Missouri State, where she went 8-of-10 from the field and added a career-best six assists.
A four-year standout at Oxford High School, Xai established herself as one of the top players in the state, helping lead her team to the Sweet 16 in all four seasons. She eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career while earning three All-State selections and twice being named County MVP. Following a runner-up finish, she was recognized as Regional MVP and earned a spot on the All-State Tournament Team. Xai also finished as a top-three finalist for 6A Player of the Year, capping off an impressive and decorated high school career.
Whitfield becomes the second transfer portal commitment for the Blue Raiders this season, joining a signing class that already includes Miami transfer Mya Kone, ESPN Top 75 recruit Aaliyah Blanchard, and Tennessee native McLyane Bobo.
Middle Tennessee also returns a strong core for the 2026–27 season, led by reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year Blair Baugus, alongside standout guards Kirston Verhulst and Carsyn Swaney. Gracie Hamby and Stanislava Kabernick bring proven production and versatility, while Jenna McClendon, Nicole Dominguez, and Nora Ahamadi add size, skill, and depth heading into the new campaign.
