Blue Raiders take decisive 7-0 win over Chattanooga

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Blue Raider tennis team began the 2011 spring season with a sweep, 7-0, over UT-Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon at Nashboro Village.
The Blue Raiders began the match with a sweep of doubles to win their first point. Freshman Elliot Barnwell and Joseph Cohen were reunited; the pair played doubles together before arriving at Middle Tennessee, at No. 2 doubles and took an 8-1 win over William Disterdick and Chris Smith.
Then senior Kyle Wishing and r-freshman Dimitri Pippos paired up for an 8-3 win over Stephen Crofford and Sam Parfitt to seal the point for the team. Rounding out doubles play were sophomore Shaun Waters and freshman Ben Davis who defeated Trent Cobb and Tresnan Jackson 8-5.
Junior Matthew Langley made it 2-0 in favor of Middle Tennessee with his decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over UTC's Roberto Vieira at No. 2 singles. Davis made it a three-point match with his win over Jackson, 6-3, 6-4.
Then Barnwell sealed the win for the team with his win over Smith. Barnwell won the first set easily 6-1 but in the second set had a battle on his hands before pulling out the 7-6 win for the match.
Playing No. 1 singles, Waters lost his first set 6-4 to Cobb but won the next two easily 6-2, 6-3 for his first three-set win of the spring.
Pippos win his singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Disterdick while Cohen defeated Crofford 7-6, 6-1 to round out the match for Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 23 at noon when they play host to Tennessee Tech at Nashboro Village.
