Middle Tennessee closes home schedule with solid victory

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee women's tennis team ended its eight-match homestand and 2011 home slate with a 6-1 victory over UAB Sunday afternoon at the Old Fort Park Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
"Today's result reflects a total team effort," head coach Melissa Schaub said. "With the windy conditions, it made play difficult on everyone. However, our team did not let the adversity affect it and we showed a lot of heart and determination in closing out our home schedule in style."
High winds, sometimes gusting to above 30 miles per hour, forced players from both sides to adapt to the conditions. The Blue Raiders, however, maintained their focus and began the day by claiming the doubles point.
Juniors Alex Dachos and Carla Nava started the match with a resounding 8-0 sweep over Jenny Cape and Menanteau Moolman at the No. 3 slot. The point then fell into the favor of Middle Tennessee (7-8) after it picked up an 8-5 decision during the No. 2 meeting, as junior Marietta Bigus and sophomore Lexi Brand handed the setback to Paula Alvarez and Caroline Faught.
The momentum continued to be on the Blue Raiders' side in singles action, as they tallied five straight-set victories in the six matches. UAB (6-10) only was able to earn wins on the day at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Yuiri Nomoto posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Giorgia Romeo at the No. 1 position, while Nava handed Evelien Strijker a 6-3, 6-3 defeat at the No. 2 slot.
Brand registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Cape during the No. 4 matchup, while junior Taylor Coffey topped Faught by a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the No. 5 battle.
Dachos provided the other singles point for Middle Tennessee, as she won 6-4, 6-2 against Moolman at the No. 6 position.
The Blue Raiders will return to action as they open a three-match road swing to conclude the regular season at Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. Friday in Boca Raton, Fla.
