Suffer first C-USA loss
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The anticipated showdown between C-USA heavyweights Middle Tennessee and Marshall never developed here Saturday.
Marshall (6-0, 2-0) jumped out to an early lead and maintained control throughout the game on the way to a 49-24 win against the Blue Raiders (4-3, 3-1) at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Though playing from behind, Middle Tennessee hung around throughout the first half and was still within striking distance when it went into the half trailing 28-17. The Blue Raiders were not able to maintain any offensive consistency in the second half and Marshall continued to pull away.
The Thundering Herd added two third-quarter touchdowns and tacked on another early in the fourth quarter to push its advantage to 49-17.
Middle Tennessee added a late touchdown when Jeremiah Bryson got into the end zone but it was too little, too late.
The Blue Raiders managed 370 yards total offense. Quarterback Austin Grammer completed 25-of-37 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Grammer's touchdowns included a 6-yard pass to Jordan Parker and a 4-yard strike to Shane Tucker.
Parker led the ground game with 100 yards. It was his second 100-yard game of the season. Ed'Marques Batties finished with three receptions for 50 yards and Terry Pettis finished with four for 47.
Shubert Basteen enjoyed a career day against Marshall. Basteen turned in a career-high 11 tackles, seven solo, and added a sack. His previous high for tackles was eight at Arkansas.
The Blue Raiders faced an early deficit from the early portion of the first quarter but they stayed within striking distance.
Middle Tennessee's biggest break of the first half came just before halftime. Leading 28-10, Marshall was looking to add to its lead on a late drive but Blue Raider end Steven Rhodes forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Cavellis Luckett with less than two minutes remaining.
The Blue Raiders converted Marshall's only first-half turnover into points when quarterback Austin Grammer connected with Shane Tucker for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds remaining. Cody Clark's extra point pulled the Blue Raiders to within 28-17 at the half.
Marshall jumped out to a 14-0 lead but Middle Tennessee finally got into the act when Grammer capped a seven-play, 63-yard drive with a 6-yard pass to Jordan Parker. Grammer was 3-of-3 for 58 yards on the drive. His 34-yard completion to Ed'Marques Batties on the first play of the drive got the Blue Raiders rolling.
The Herd pushed the lead to 21-7 before Clark's 34-yard field goal cut the deficit to 21-10. Marshall answered with a touchdown and was looking for more before the Blue Raider defense came up with a big turnover that kept the team in the game heading into intermission.
Middle Tennessee was unable to slow Marshall's attack in the second half and suffered its first conference loss of the season. The Blue Raiders will look to get back on track when they face UAB on Homecoming Saturday. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m.
