Raiders to face tough competition at Louisville

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raider men's and women's cross country teams will face their biggest challenge of the regular season Saturday, racing in the Greater Louisville Classic against nationally ranked competition at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
In addition to Middle Tennessee, 29 men's teams are scheduled to run in the men's gold 8K race at 9:30 a.m. The Blue Raider men's squad will face current nationally ranked No. 11 Wisconsin, host Louisville (No. 7, USTFCCCA Southest Region), Virginia Tech (No. 6, USTFCCCA Southeast Region), Illinois (No. 6, USTFCCCA Midwest Region) and Ole Miss (No. 4, USTFCCCA South Region). In total there are 24 men's teams that are currently ranked in the NAIA and NCAA DI, DII and DIII regional or national rankings.
Middle Tennessee last raced Sept. 13 in the Commodore Classic, were the men's squad captured their first title of the season. MT was led by newcomer Geoffry Cheruiyot, who took home the individual title and C-USA Co-Runner of the Week honors with his 24:06.7 performance.
Closley behind G. Cheruiyot, were Hillary Rono (4th, 24:27.1), Shadrack Matelong (6th, 24:42.5) and Amos Cheruiyot (8th, 24:57.4). Transfer Peter Okwera closed out the scoring group for Middle Tennessee, placing 17th in 25:19.4. Of the scoring group, three of the five runners are freshmen with Matelong the lone sophomore and Okwera a senior.
On the women's side, the Blue Raiders don't face any easier of a task with 27 women's teams nationally or regionally ranked in the NAIA, NCAA DI, DII or DIII National Cross Country Polls.
In their last outing at the Commodore Classic, the Blue Raiders finished third overall and only fell behind host Vanderbilt and SEC opponent Mississippi State.
Gladys David led MT with her 24th place finish on the 5K course at Percy Warner Park (17:47.83) with Rhema Cheruiyot (17:53.57) and Hannah Maina (17:56.88) finishing 28th and 29th, respectively. Jackline Kiprono (32nd, 18:03.47) and Lucy Kapkiai (33rd, 18:06.71) rounded out the scoring squad for MT.
