TEMPE, Ariz. – Olivia Jones and China Dow combined for 35 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee dropped an 81-67 setback at Arizona State here Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Jones narrowly missed a double double with 19 points and nine rebounds and was a steady force for the Blue Raiders. Dow added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Caya Williams provided great production off of the bench and finished with 10 points and five rebounds in just 10 minutes of action.
Arizona State (1-0) jumped out to a 22-11 lead midway through the first half and controlled the game from there. The Blue Raiders never got closer than nine from there. The Sun Devils had three players in double figures, led by Sophie Brunner's 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Middle Tennessee (0-1) put a new-look squad on the court after losing six seniors from last season's 29-win squad. The Blue Raiders started two newcomers – freshman Rebecca Reuter and junior Brea Edwards – and had three players in the starting lineup making their first career start. Only Dow and Jones brought experience to the starting lineup and the duo played like veterans.
Arizona State connected on just one more field goal than Middle Tennessee (25-24) and each team had three 3-pointers; however, the Sun Devils outscored the Blue Raiders 28-16 at the free-throw line. Middle Tennessee was also guilty of 17 turnovers leading to 14 Sun Devil points.
Middle Tennessee held its own on the boards against the bigger Arizona State team with the Sun Devils finishing with a slim 45-44 edge.
The Blue Raiders only shot 38 percent (24-of-63) and they were 3-of-15 from 3-point range for 20 percent.
Middle Tennessee came out of the gates strong in the second half as Dow knocked down two 3-pointers and Jones' layup cut the Sun Devil lead to 47-37 with 16:10 remaining; however, a 9-0 Arizona State run pushed the advantage to 58-37 with 13:55 remaining.
The Blue Raiders have little turn around before playing Miami in the home opener Monday. Tipoff at Murphy Center is 7 p.m.
NOTEWORTHY:
Senior Shanice Cason was not in the starting lineup for Friday's opener, ending a streak of 10 straight starts dating to last season … Three Blue Raiders make their first career start against Arizona State: freshman Rebecca Reuter, sophomore Ty Petty and junior transfer Brea Edwards … Friday's game was the first ever meeting between Middle Tennessee and Arizona State … Three Blue Raiders scored their first career points (Edwards – 4, Reuter – 6 and Lyon – 1.
