MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will welcome Miami for the 2014 home opener Monday at 7 p.m.
The Blue Raiders are 27-12 in home openers, including a 7-2 mark under Head Coach Rick Insell. The two losses were against No. 1 Maryland (80-76, 2006) and No. 4 Tennessee (77-67, 2013).
MT brings an 11-game home winning streak into the game against Miami and are 114-14 at Murphy Center during Insell's previous nine seasons. The Blue Raiders won last year's matchup, 61-55, in Miami.
The Blue Raiders will be looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss at Arizona State in which they fell behind early and couldn't mount a successful comeback. Sophomore Olivia Jones led MT with 19 points and nine rebounds. China Dow also had a strong debut with 16 points, and Caya Williams came off the bench to supply 10 points and five rebounds in 10 minutes of action.
Youth is abundant after the Blue Raiders lost six seniors from last year's 29-5 C-USA championship squad. Three Blue Raiders made their first career start against Arizona State. Nine of the 14 players on the Blue Raider roster are underclassmen, including four freshmen and five sophomores.
Even though MT is a young squad, Insell still challenged them with a tough schedule. Six of MT's first seven opponents are against the ACC (Clemson, Miami); SEC (Ole Miss, Kentucky) and Pac-12 (Arizona State).
Miami is coming off a season-opening win against Oakland and come into the game with a 1-0 mark.
MT was 2-0 against ACC members last season with wins against Miami and Clemson. The Blue Raiders are 6-8 all-time against members of the ACC.
