MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee cross country teams start their 2014 season Friday at the Belmont Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee at Percy Warner Park. The women's team is slated to run the 5K course at 5:30 p.m. with the men's team to follow at 6 p.m.
"The Belmont Invite is good meet to start with and is close to home," said head coach Dean Hayes. "We can just run down to Nashville Friday evening and compete. It allows us to get the kids started and see where they are at this point"
The Blue Raider men's squad welcomes back one of their top runners from last season in Shadrack Matelong, who finished a team-second best 16th at the invite in 2013. Alden Dixon is the lone other returner from last year's team that will participate in Nashville, while MT welcomes newcomers Amos Cheruiyot, Brandon Frey and Hillary Rono to the squad.
The women's team welcomes back its top-two runners in Lucy Kapkiai and Jackline Kiprono. Kiprono finished with a team-best 32nd place finish in the 5K meet Belmont Invite last season. In addition, MT returns Julia Kitevski along with newcomers to the cross country team in Gladys David and Hannah Maina.
