Team eager for second tourney
MEMPHIS - With nowhere to go but up, the Middle Tennessee men's golf team will head to Memphis for their next outing, hoping to show the collegiate golfing world that they are, indeed, much better than their last outing.
In a star-studded field that included two-time NCAA Champion Alabama, and several other ranked teams, the Blue Raiders finished last at The Farm in Rocky Face, GA.
The Blue Raiders will play 54 holes, on the South Course at Colonial Country Club, one of the most challenging courses in the state. It is a par 72 measuring 7,334 yards from the back tees.
"We have played in this tournament several times, and our guys are familiar with this course, so we hope to do much better than our showing last week," said Coach Whit Turnbow.
Turnbow also hopes to get better performances out of his seniors at Memphis, and has altered his lineup to include two freshmen, Conner Smith and Hoyeong Kim.
"I can't remember when I had two true freshmen in the line-up, it's been a long time."
Seniors Brett Patterson and Payne Denman, and junior Drake Duncan will be joined by Smith and Kim
Red-shirt freshman Conner Slane, who played last week at The Farm, will make the trip to Memphis as well and play as an individual.
Patterson, normally the bell cow for the team, had a particularly tough weekend at The Farm, finishing last on the team, and 72nd overall in the field of 75.
"He just played bad, and when he plays bad, we play bad as a team," said Turnbow. "He's like a star quarterback. When he is playing well, the team plays well, but when he is throwing interceptions, we aren't going to beat anybody.
"But I feel like he will play much better at Memphis, as will the team. We just have to put last week behind us and be ready to compete."
Turnbow also made mention of the fact that the MTSU women's golf team won their tournament at Memphis earlier this month, and that his team needed to keep pace.
"Chris (Coach Adams) has got her team playing real well, and we hope to go to Memphis and duplicate what they did," declared Turnbow.
The first round will get underway Monday morning.
