Parker sets single-game blocks record
NORFOLK, Va. – Three players reached double figures and Middle Tennessee won for the seventh time in eight games with a convincing 65-48 win in front of 1,892 against Old Dominion at the Constant Center Thursday.
Middle Tennessee (11-5, 5-1) won its eighth straight C-USA road game dating to last season and remained in sole possession of second-place in the league standings – one game off the lead.
"All road wins are good wins because you have to be mentally tough to get it done on the road," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We played well overall and we had too in order to get the win against a good Old Dominion team."
Sophomore Olivia Jones continued her torrid pace with 24 points and eight rebounds to lead all scorers. Jones has scored 20-plus points in eight of the last nine games.
Senior forward Cheyenne Parker just missed becoming the first Blue Raider to record a triple-double. Parker finished with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, pulled a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked a career-high nine shots.
It was Parker's team-best eighth double-double and she moved past Holly Hoover into fifth place on the single-season blocks list at Middle Tennessee with 43. The nine blocks also established a new single-game record for the Blue Raiders.
Brea Edwards finished with 11 points and five rebounds, and Ty Petty was a stat-sheet stuffer with eight points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Senior captain Shanice Cason also continued her sterling play against the Lady Monarchs (10-7, 3-3). Cason had seven points, tied her season-high with six rebounds, four assists, no turnovers and three steals. Cason has 29 assists and just three turnovers in the last five games. Cason's greatest contribution against ODU was her superlative defense. Cason limited Jennie Simms to eight points. Simms entered the game averaging 17.4 points per game, which was second in C-USA.
"Shanice is our senior captain and she has been playing very well of late," Insell said. "She is sometimes overshadowed but her play was a key to this win tonight. She did a great job guarding (Simms), who came into the game as one of the league's top scorers."
Middle Tennessee took control of the game from the opening tip. ODU never led after the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 9-0 lead five minutes into the game. Jones set the early tone with eight of the team's first nine points.
ODU closed to within 9-6 with 11:50 remaining in the first half, but Caroline Warden drained a long 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run that provided Middle Tennessee a 19-6 lead following Parker's layup with 7:22 remaining. ODU would not get closer than nine the remainder of the way.
Middle Tennessee led 29-19 at the half and maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half. The Blue Raiders forced 16 turnovers and were only guilty of nine. They parlayed the 16 ODU miscues into 20 points.
Middle Tennessee will look to continue its winning ways with another pivotal C-USA game at Charlotte Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:03 a.m. and the game will be televised by Fox Sports.
