MT hosts three opponents this weekend
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Nashboro Village Athletic Club will be the battlefield for another double-header on the Middle Tennessee men's tennis schedule on Friday, Jan. 30.
The Blue Raiders will play the underdog role against the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 2 p.m., and will take the courts again at 6 p.m. to face the Jackson State Tigers.
MT enjoyed a successful opening day, as it claimed a 6-1 victory over Chattanooga and swept Mel Purcell's Murray State Racers 7-0.
The Wolfpack is ranked No. 31 in the latest ITA team rankings after opening the season at No. 28. NC State features No. 39 singles ranked Nick Horton, No. 51 ranked Austin Powell and No. 123 ranked Robbie Mudge, along with the 19th ITA ranked doubles team of Ian Dempster and Mudge.
NC State is 3-0 at home, collecting wins against Northwestern, Michigan State and North Carolina Central, but are 0-2 on neutral courts including losses to Mississippi State and Harvard, both by scores of 3-4 each. They have yet to play an away match.
Two years ago the Blue Raiders defeated the Wolfpack 4-3 when NC State was ranked No. 34.
Jackson State will be the final opponent of the day for the Blue Raiders. The Tigers are no stranger to big-time competition, as they have already played matches against Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Last season MT was able to grab a 7-0 sweep against Jackson State.
Play will get underway at 2 p.m. vs NC State and 6 p.m. vs Jackson State.
The Blue Raiders will close the weekend with a match against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 1 at noon. This will be the Golden Eagles second match of the spring season as they open the year against Lipscomb on Saturday.
Middle Tennessee has won its last six matches against the Golden Eagles, with its last loss to Tennessee Tech dating back to 1999.
LIVE STATS will be available as the Blue Raiders look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the ITA rankings.
