Blue Raiders battle back versus Wolfpack, take win over Tigers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Blue Raider men's tennis program went head to head with a Power Five program and did not back down from the challenge, coming up just shy of the win in a case where the box score doesn't tell the whole story.
Doubles play got off to a fast start for the North Carolina State Wolfpack, who came into the match ranked 31st in the country by the ITA. Dima Zyhmantovic and Robin Riethmueller lost the match at No. 3 doubles, 6-1. No. 1 and No. 2 doubles ended in similar fashion, with NC State taking the victory by a score of 6-3 in both matches.
NC State's Beck Bond won over Zyhmantovic 6-1, 6-2, although Zyhmantovic threatened make a comeback, as he led early on in the second set. Victor Hoang led early on in both sets, but came up just shy, by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Then it got interesting.
At No. 1 singles, Ben Davis was taken to a third set against No. 51 ranked Austin Powell, where he also fell 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. A third set was necessary for Ettore Zito at No. 2 singles vs. No. 123 ranked Robbie Mudge, but he lost by the same score of 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. To save time, Gian Issa's third set at the No. 5 singles spot was cut to a 10-point tiebreak, to put his final score at 6-4, 2-6, 0-1 (2-10).
Riethmueller's match ended with all eyes on him as he took on No. 39 nationally ranked Nick Horton. He battled hard in both sets, but came up just shy, as he lost the last match of the afternoon, 6-7 (5-7), 4-6. NC State took the win 7-0, and the Blue Raiders shifted their focus towards the Jackson State Tigers and the nightcap of the double-header.
Zyhmantovic and Riethmueller needed just over 10 minutes to complete their doubles match, which ended 6-0 in favor of the Blue Raiders. Davis and Zito cruised to a 6-1 victory, and ended their match almost simultaneously with Born and Hoang, who took a 6-3 win.
In singles play, Issa was the first to finish, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Hoang added to the MT success with a 6-3, 6-3 win of his own at No. 3 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Born takes the first set easily, but faces adversity and is forced to come back in the second set to win it, 6-2, 6-4. Miguel Negre Fernandez seemed to get better and better as the match went on, as he took the win at No. 6 singles to secure the sweep of the Tigers, 6-3, 6-2.
The Blue Raiders will be back on the court Sunday, February 1 at 12 p.m. against Tennessee Tech. If you can't make it to the Nashboro Village Athletic Club, LIVE STATS will be available.
