Raiders earn second five set win of the season
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (6-19, 4-7), kept their Conference USA tournament hopes alive with a 3-2 win over FIU (13-9, 7-4) Sunday at Alumni Memorial Gym.
It was a tale of two matches, the match before intermission and the one after. The Raiders got off to a blazing start as they earned the win in each of the first two frames. But then they had to hold on as a tough Panther team stretched the match to five sets, where Middle Tennessee finally took the victory.
Chelsea Ross led all scorers once again with 21 kills, but Miri Shade had another great match as she earned 19 kills. Shade had 10 of her kills in just the first two frames, eight in the second set alone, as MT grabbed the early match advantage.
Delaney Taylor dazzled again as she picked up another 51 assists and Jacqueline Lux looked back to form with 21 digs on the afternoon. Lux only had one service ace in the match, but the Raiders liked her on the service line. MT earned 17 points when Lux served on the day including the final four points of the match. FIU came into the match the number one blocking team in C-USA, but that was no problem for MT as they out-blocked the Panthers 22-16 in the five frames.
The first set began slowly for the Raiders as FIU took the first two points, but from there MT hit on something extremely productive. Middle Tennessee scored 10 of the next 12 points to open a 10-4 advantage on the Panthers. FIU was not quite done as they ran off a 9-2 run of their own to take a 13-12 lead, but the Raiders came right back with a 9-3 advantage to open a 21-16 lead and would not look back from there. MT took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-20 first frame win.
Middle Tennessee began the second set much the way they played the first. They earned eight of the first 11 points, then after a quick 4-0 Panther run, picked up the next six in a row to take a 14-7 lead. Shade led all players with eight kills in the frame, including three in a row at one point, and hit .385 on her 13 attacks. She also earned two blocks and accounted for nine of the Raiders points in the frame. FIU did make a run late as an 8-1 run cut the Raiders lead to 19-17, but it was too little too late as MT was able to close out the set 25-23 and take a 2-0 match lead.
The Raiders began the third frame well again as they cruised out a 6-2 lead. But FIU whittled away at the advantage for the remainder of the set. At first a 5-1 run tied the score 7-7, then later a 6-2 advantage gave them a 15-13 lead. After the teams traded a couple of side outs, FIU took three points in a row to up their advantage to 21-17. From there they closed out the set 25-20 and got back in the match, down just 2-1.
FIU gained the momentum they needed in the third, as they opened a 9-2 lead on MT in the fourth frame. The Panthers out hit the Raiders .300-.188 in the set as Gloria Levorin led all scorers with five kills and hit .375 with two blocks. Dominique Dodd converted all three of her attempts into kills and earned 10 assists in the frame. The Raiders did out-block FIU 7-6 in the set, but that was about the only advantage for the girls in blue as the Panthers evened the match 2-2 with a 25-17 fourth frame victory.
The Blue Raiders were able to get on another run quickly as they earned three of the first four points in set five. After FIU cut the lead the 3-2 each team battled as they traded the next 11 points. Middle Tennessee needed a spark up 8-7, and got it from Ross. She picked up her 20th kill to give MT a 9-7 lead and the Raiders closed out from there, winning seven of the final eight points. The Raiders took the fifth frame 15-8 and earned just their second five set win of the season, 3-2.
Middle Tennessee goes back on the road this weekend to take on LA Tech on Friday in Rustin, La., and then UAB in Birmingham on Sunday. The Raiders have defeated both the Lady Techsters and Blazers this season, and are looking to gain some momentum down the stretch to earn a bid to their second C-USA tournament in three years.
