MT earns a spot in the C-USA Tournament
MURFREESBORO – The Middle Tennessee soccer team played its third-straight double-overtime game on Friday night, but this time, the Blue Raiders came away with the win, stunning UTEP on the road, 2-1.
"I was really proud of the way girls battled tonight," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "Their character showed against a really strong opponent in UTEP who is even better at home. Overall, I was very pleased with our effort and desire."
Freshman Morgan Mauck headed a ball played from Courteney Gibson into the top-left corner of the net in the second minute of the second overtime for the decisive score. Mauck's goal was her third of the season and also marked Gibson's third assist of the year and second of the game.
Tori Hawkins got the Blue Raiders (8-6-3, 5-2-2 C-USA) rolling when her own header got past the UTEP goalkeeper in the 26th minute. It marked the third time that both Hawkins and Mauck scored a goal in the same game.
Middle Tennessee goalie Kelsey Brouwer only had to make one save in the first period as MT went into the locker room up 7-2 in shots and 1-0 on the scoreboard.
The Miners (11-7-2, 4-4-2 C-USA) woke up in the second stanza and Kennadie Chauhary got one past Brouwer in the 53rd minute for her third goal of the campaign. The goal was part of a 10-shot UTEP onslaught in which Brouwer was asked to make three saves in the half.
Chauhary's score tied the game for the next 49 minutes until Mauck netted the walk-off.
The MT defense was equally instrumental in the win as the unit did not allow a single shot in extra time.
After earning three points, the Blue Raiders earned a spot in the C-USA Tournament in Miami, Fla. next week.
Before that trip, MT will travel to Old Dominion for a matchup with the Monarchs on Sunday. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
