MT loses to Marshall 3-2, eliminated from C-USA post-season
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (8-22, 6-10) looked like they were well on their way to their second Conference USA Tournament appearance as they took a 2-0 lead over Marshall (16-13, 7-9) on Senior Day at Alumni Memorial Gym. But the Herd put together one of the best rallies of the season to beat the Raiders 3-2 and pry the eighth and final seed in the Conference USA Championship out of MT's hands.
The Raiders were leading the match 2-0 and were up 17-12 in the third, but Marshall was able to hit on something that turned the match completely around. Middle Tennessee has struggled at times this season with service errors and it was a service error that began the snowball that turned into the avalanche the Raiders couldn't get out of the way of.
Up 17-12 in the third, MT's service error turned into a 13-5 run for Marshall to close out the set 25-22 and force a fourth. Marshall gained an unbelievable amount of momentum from that third set win as they scored the first 13 points of the fourth. Allie Kellerman served all those points and finally, a service error by Kellerman gave the Raiders their first point of the frame, but by then it was too little too late. The Herd won the set 25-12 on the back of nine Cassie Weaver kills. Kayla Simmons helped out Weaver with eight assists in the frame as Marshall out-hit MT .324-.138.
The momentum continued for the Herd as they sprinted out a 7-2 lead in set five. MT was able to get back into it with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 7-6, but that's as close as they got. Marshall was able to earn another 6-2 run for a 13-8 lead and closed out the Raiders 15-11 in the fifth for a 3-2 win.
Weaver led all scorers with 28 kills, 22 of which came in the final three frames. Ally Kiekover chipped in 18 more for the Herd on a .593 hitting percentage as setter Kayla Simmons led all scorers with 53 assists.
Chelsea Ross led Middle Tennessee in scoring for the final time, as the senior earned 21 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Makila York had her best game as a Blue Raider as she earned a career high 14 kills and another career high .636 hitting percentage. Jacqueline Lux continued to adjust to her new setter role with another career high 41 assists. Ross finished her career with another double-double as she added a team-high 17 digs to her 21 kills.
The Raiders looked good early as they played with Marshall in the first frame through the early part. Then, down 11-9, MT went on a 12-3 run to take control 21-14. They were able to take set one 25-18 for a 1-0 match lead. Four Blue Raiders got into the stat sheet in the kill department, including Ross with six and Miri Shade with four. Ashton Peck earned four digs in the set as well to lead MT's back row.
Middle Tennessee opened the second with four of the first five points. After Marshall tied the frame 7-7, MT went on a 15-4 run to open a 22-11 lead. Ross led with five kills, York added four, and Shade earned four more. Lux picked up eight helpers and even though the Herd finished the set on an 8-3 run, MT was able to survive for a 25-19 win, a 2-0 match lead, and looked poised to punch the final ticket to the C-USA Tournament.
With the loss, the Blue Raiders are done from contending for the C-USA Championship. This marks just the first time since 1998-99 that MT will miss two consecutive conference tournaments. However, with a good group of talented young players, the future looks bright for Blue Raider volleyball.
