Giddy Potts Led MT with 21 points
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team defeated Tennessee State, 69-66, for the team's 10th straight win in the rivalry.
Giddy Potts led the Blue Raiders (1-1) with 21 points, 19 in the first half, and Darnell Harris (16) and Quavius Copeland (15) also scored in double-figures.
Keron Deshields paced Tennessee State (2-2) with a game-high 28 points and Marcus Roper chipped in with 12.
Reggie Upshaw hauled in a season-high 11 rebounds and the Blue Raider defense forced 15 turnovers on the night.
Potts was the team's go-to option early in the game and connected on five three-pointers in the first half. His third of the period put the Blue Raiders ahead, 15-6, with only six minutes gone.
The Tigers roared back with a 13-3 run to take the lead at 19-18 and Xavier Habersham finally ended the six-minute stretch with a corner three pointer to put his team back on top.
The sides played it close for the remainder of the half, but Copeland netted his seventh point with 33 seconds before the intermission and the Blue Raiders took a 37-30 lead into the locker room.
Mt shot 44.8 percent from the field and a scorching 58.3 percent from three-pot range during the opening 20 minutes.
The Blue Raiders cooled considerably to start the second half and missed their first eight shots, allowing Tennessee State to cut the MT advantage down to three. Upshaw finally ended the drought with an old-fashioned three-point play to make the score 40-36 with 14 minutes to play.
The teams traded hoops for a majority of the period but a strong Copeland drive into the lane put MT firmly ahead by seven.
TSU fought back with a 9-1 run to go ahead, 59-58, with 3:49 remaining and not to be outdone, the Blue Raiders evened the score inside the final two minutes.
Potts canned two free throws down the stretch and Upshaw converted a wild, spinning layup to put MT in front by three with only 21 seconds remaining.
The MT defense did the rest, coming up with two key stops to give the Blue Raiders their first win on the season.
Middle Tennessee will stay on the road for the Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 26-28. MT will begin the tournament against host University of Alaska Anchorage on Thanksgiving at 8:30 p.m.
