MT defeats Toledo, 78-70, to win the Great Alaska Shootout
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Jaqawn Raymond threw the ball up into the air in jubilation as time expired because the Middle Tennessee men's basketball team was crowned the champions of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout with a, 78-70, win over Toledo on Saturday night.
The three-game sweep was just the second regular-season tournament title of the 14-year Kermit Davis era.
Following the game, Perrin Buford, Giddy Potts and Reggie Upshaw were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Upshaw turned in his best performance of the young season when MT needed it most, scoring a team high 17 points.
Giddy Potts also had his fifth-straight double-digit scoring game with 15 points for the Blue Raiders (4-1).
After Copeland nailed his third basket with only seven minutes gone in the opening half, Toledo went on a nine-point run to move ahead, 20-11. The Blue Raiders had six turnovers and were held without a point for over six minutes during the stretch.
Head Coach Kermit Davis drew up a play following the third media timeout and Perrin Buford connected with a mid-range jumper to finally halt the Rocket run. The hoop ignited the Raider offense and three-pointer by Giddy Potts drew his team within one with 3:39 left in the half.
MT was down by three with under a minute to go before halftime and after a busted play, Reggie Upshaw found himself wide open from beyond the arc with just seconds on the clock. The junior lined up his shot and promptly drained it to tie the game at 32 heading into the break.
The Blue Raiders shot a sizzling 52 percent from the field during the opening 20 minutes and Toledo was even hotter at 56.5 percent.
MT continued to roll in the beginning of the second stanza, scoring eight straight out of the gate to give the Blue Raiders a, 40-32, advantage with three minutes gone.
Toledo cut the lead down to three later in the period, but a layup by Upshaw and back-to-back threes from Potts and Edward Simpson gave the Blue Raiders its largest lead of the game at 11 with six-and-a-half minutes to go.
The Rockets fought back and got the advantage down to six on five different occasions, but each time the Blue Raiders responded with a big hoop.
Darnell Harris canned his only three-pointer of the game to put MT up by nine with just over a minute to go, and Toledo had no choice but to foul the rest of the way.
The Blue Raiders responded with five-straight freebies down the stretch and just minutes later, the Blue Raiders were posing for pictures on center court.
The Blue Raiders will return to Murfreesboro on Sunday and will begin their preparation for Virginia Commonwealth. MT will host the Rams on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m.
