Summers' Late Goal Lifts MT Over Rice
11/4/2015 3:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MT will play North Texas on Friday
MIAMI, Fla. – A perfectly placed strike off of the leg of Grace Summers catapulted the Middle Tennessee soccer team into the Semifinals of the C-USA Championships with a, 1-0, victory over Rice on Wednesday.
"Rice is a fantastic team and we saw that when we played them to a 0-0 tie at their place earlier this year," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "We knew we had to do some different things in this game if we wanted to be successful."
It was a game that played to MT's strength – not a lot of chances for either side, but just enough to provide at least one firework.
And what a boom it was.
After going the first 77 minutes without a shot attempt, Summers found herself with a wide-open chance following a deflection outside of the box and saw her opportunity. The senior made sure that Wednesday would not be her last game by drilling the ball just outside of the keeper's hands and into the corner of the net at the 78-minute mark.
Summers's strike was one of MT's three shots on goal and the only real scoring opportunity throughout the game.
On a day that was so hot that the game was halted twice for water breaks, MT goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer was equally sizzling. The C-USA Defensive Player of the Year proved worthy of the award by posting her school-record 10th shutout of the season and tallying nine saves.
The Blue Raiders (10-5-4) looked off the start the game, as their usual possession offense was ineffective. Rice (10-7-2) controlled the ball for much of the first half and led in shot attempts, 8-3, heading into halftime.
However, the momentum changed in the second stanza as the Blue Raiders put up seven shots including the game-winner from Summers. MT also possessed the ball for much longer and was able to hold off a late Rice attack that could have forced the Blue Raiders into their fifth-straight overtime game.
Instead, Middle Tennessee advances to play the No. 1 seed in the C-USA Championship, North Texas. The Mean Green beat WKU, 1-0, earlier in the day and escaped with a, 3-2, win over MT earlier this season.
Kickoff for the MT-NT semifinals matchup is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 6.
