Raiders beat Auburn, 88-81
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In an overtime thriller at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday, Middle Tennessee pulled out an, 88-81, win against Auburn.
"This was one of the best college games I've ever been a part of with all of the runs and high amounts of scoring," head coach Kermit Davis said. "What we did in overtime speaks highly of our toughness and I thought the experience we have was big for us today."
Reggie Upshaw tallied his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds while tying his season-high four assists. Darnell Harris was a rebound shy of his own double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Giddy Potts totaled 18 points and four rebounds against the Tigers. Perrin Buford finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Edward Simpson had a season-high 13 points off the bench.
Middle Tennessee (6-2) shot 45.5 percent and poured in eight three-pointers. The Raiders also tied their season high with 47 rebounds in the contest.
MT held Auburn (4-2) to 40.0 percent from the field while the Tigers hurt themselves with a 45.8 percent effort from the charity stripe.
Auburn jumped out to a quick, 78-75, lead in overtime, but it was all Middle Tennessee from there. The Raiders closed out the game with a 10-3 run to get the win.
Upshaw took over in a back-and-forth second half to give the Raiders a late lead before Auburn's Kareem Canty hit a game-tying three with 1.7 seconds left in regulation.
Middle Tennessee ignited the crowd early on with a 7-0 run heading into the second media timeout to take an 18-15 lead, but Auburn took the lead back at the 9:22 mark before taking a 38-29 lead into the locker room.
Upshaw opened the second half scoring with back-to-back buckets in the paint followed by a Simpson three-pointer to bring the Raiders back within two.
An alley-oop from Buford to Upshaw and another Simpson three-pointer tied the game up for the first time since the 9:04 mark in the first half.
Harris gave the Blue Raiders the lead back with 16:06 left, capping a 14-3 run to open the second half.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 17 when they take on Belmont at the Murphy Center in a 6 p.m. contest.
