Game 2: Middle Tennessee - 8 Liberty - 7
In the end, all you need to win by is one run and that's exactly what MT did against the Flames. Liberty almost pulled off the comeback as it scored six runs and had a chance at the end to almost pull off the rally.
With two outs and already scoring a run to cut the MT lead to one, 8-7, Cheney clinched the win for the Blue Raiders as she forced a Liberty batter into a groundout with a runner in scoring position.
It was Cheney's first save of the season as she pitched the final two innings of the contest to allow four hits and a run.
The final four innings of the contest provided fireworks as there were 14 runs scored after just one run scored in the first three innings of the contest.
In the top of the fifth inning with the game tied at one apiece, senior Alma Cortez led off the inning with a double before she advanced to third off a Birdsong single.
A liberty throwing error in the ensuing at-bat scored Cortez from third to break the 1-1 tie.
After Freeman hit for an infield single and Nieves drew a walk to load the bases, Willis' big bat came through with a bases-clearing double to left center that gave MT a 5-1 run.
In the ensuing inning, junior Randi Cookus led off with a walk just before Freeman's walk set up Jenkins for her opposite field shot over the right field wall that gave the Blue Raiders an 8-1 advantage.
But Liberty wouldn't go quietly as it scored six runs on five hits and an error to cut the MT lead to two, 8-6, before leading up to the nail-biting finish in the final frame.
"We had enough toughness to hang on in the last inning for a win against Liberty. We got better as a team today," stated Breeden.
Sophomore Megan Chocallo improved to 2-0 this season as she picked up the win after putting in five innings of work and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Senior Caitlin McClure also came in for a brief stint inside the circle.
Jenkins finished 2-for-3 for the game and three RBI, while Willis ended the game with a double and four RBI.
Junior Megan Griffith ended the game with a 2-for-4 outing. Birdsong, Freeman, freshman Morgan Harris and Cortez all chipped in with a hit as well.
