Raiders eager to get started
MURFREESBORO – The Middle Tennessee men's golf team will begin its spring season on Monday in Mobile, Alabama for the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate. The 15-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course (par 72, 7,160 yards).
"We are excited to see some temperatures above freezing and get on the golf course," said Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "This has been a tough winter, especially the last couple weeks but that's why we have an indoor facility. The guys have worked hard and we will be ready to go. I think everyone is just eager to begin competing again."
The tournament field will include Auburn, Belmont, Davidson, Illinois State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Michigan State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, host South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State and Western Kentucky.
There will also be an individual tournament at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course (par 71, 7,111 yards) that will also consist of 54 holes. Middle Tennessee's Connor Smith will represent the Blue Raiders in the individual tournament.
Headlining the field for the Blue Raiders will be seniors Payne Denman and Brett Patterson. Denman, who led the team in the fall with a 73.9 scoring average, tied for third at last year's event to pace MT. The Riverwatch, Tennessee native had rounds of 68-72-73. Patterson had rounds of 76-74-70 to tie for 20th.
Sophomore Drake Duncan, sophomore Connor Slane and freshman Hoyeong Kim will round out the lineup. All three will be making their first appearance at the event which the Blue Raiders won in 2011 and 2012.
This will be the first of seven spring tournaments, including the Conference USA Championship. Following the spring opener, the Raiders will compete in the Louisiana Classic (Lafayette, LA), General Hackler Invitational (Murrells Inlet, SC), FAU Spring Break Challenge (Lake Worth, FL), 3M Augusta Invitational (Augusta, GA), and the Greenbriar Intercollegiate (White Sulphur Springs, WV).
There will be a shotgun start on Monday at 8:30 AM while Tuesday's round will get underway at 8:00 AM off of holes 1 and 10. Live stats for the tournament Monday and Tuesday will be updated every three holes on Golfstat.com.
