Blue Raiders sweep Tigers on Sunday

MT defeats TSU in doubleheader
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee enjoyed another dominant day on its home court at Nashboro Athletic Club, shutting out Tennessee State in both matches.
The Tigers came into the day with only five players on their roster, meaning they were forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches. This gave MT a 1-0 lead before the matches started.
At No. 1 doubles, Yannick Born and Gian Issa defeated their opponents 8-1. Miguel Negre Fernandez and Robin Riethmueller followed suit with an 8-1 victory of their own, giving MT a 2-0 advantage entering singles play.
Issa continued his dominance with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Dima Zyhmantovich moved up in the lineup to the No. 2 spot, but succeeded with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Ettore Zito also moved up to the top spot, with similar results, as he took a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Born dropped the first set at No. 4 singles, but came back to dominate the third set tiebreak and win his match by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1). At No. 5, Negre Fernandez took down his competition with ease 6-0, 6-0.
The Blue Raiders and Tigers faced off again a few hours later; however, the results were not any different.
The lineup stayed the same for doubles play, as Born and Issa again grabbed an 8-1 win. Negre Fernandez and Riethmueller went up 4-1 early, but the Tigers fought back to make it 5-4. The Blue Raiders ended up winning the match 8-4. The third doubles match and sixth singles matches were again forfeited, giving MT a 2-0 lead.
Negre Fernandez continued his successful run with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot. Zyhmantovich and Zito both captured 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to put the Blue Raiders on top 5-0.
The match at No. 3 singles went back and forth, but ended in Riethmueller looking dominant in the final set, as he took the win 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Born completed the second Blue Raider sweep of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5.
MT will continue their challenging slate with a matchup against Northwestern on February 27 at 2:30 p.m. It will be the first match outside of the state of Tennessee in the spring 2015 campaign.
