Frebis Records Career-High Strikeouts
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee opened up Conference USA play with an 8-0 victory over UAB on Saturday afternoon. Due to wet weather conditions, the Blue Raiders will host the Blazers in a Sunday doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Middle Tennessee (9-6, 1-0) defeated UAB in the league opener for the second straight year, led by senior LHP Johnathan Frebis who fanned a career high eight batters while tossing seven shutout innings. Frebis also scattered four hits and earned his third win of the season.
The Blue Raider bats came back to life Saturday with 11 hits, including sophomore Kaleb King's first career home run. MT entered the contest averaging just 6.8 hits per game over its previous five.
"Our guys came out focused against a really tough pitcher," head coach Jim McGuire said. "We made up our mind that we were going to try to play for a run early, just because we've been struggling so bad to score any runs, and it worked out for us."
Junior Ronnie Jebavy delivered a one-out RBI single to give MT the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jebavy had a fantastic all-around performance, going a perfect 3-for-3 (career high) to extend his hit streak to 12 games, while racking up two RBI, two stolen bases and two walks. He also threw out a runner at the plate from center field to end UAB's second inning.
Sophomores Brad Jarreau (2-for-4; RBI) and Kevin Dupree (2-for-4) each posted multi-hit efforts. Dupree's leadoff double to opposite left field started a three-run fifth inning for the Blue Raiders. With MT leading 5-0, King homered off the Lee Victory Wall of Champions, a no-doubter, to make it 6-0 after six complete.
UAB's biggest threat came in the eighth inning. After the first two Blazers reached base, McGuire pulled Frebis in favor of go-to reliever RHP Blake Stansberry. The true freshman has done nothing but dominate lately, and that trend continued after he struck out the side to leave the bases loaded. Stansberry has not allowed a run to score in 10.2 consecutive innings.
The rain picked up late in the game and affected both teams. MT scored three insurance runs in the eighth when a Jared Allen pop-up with the bases full landed in no-man's land down the left field line.
Dustin Delgado singled and walked, raising his reached-base streak to 30 games dating back to last season. The senior became the first Blue Raider to reach in 30 straight games since Blake McDade reached 31 times in 2010.
UAB committed a season-high five errors and both teams left nine on base.
NOTE:
By conference rules, both games on Sunday will be played as seven-inning contests.
