Pitching Finds Stride in Sunday DH
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee captured two victories in Sunday's doubleheader against UAB to open Conference USA play with a series sweep of the Blazers. The Blue Raiders won the first game 3-0 and held on for a narrow 3-2 triumph in the finale.
Middle Tennessee improves to 11-6 overall and begins league play undefeated at 3-0. The Blue Raiders will begin a four-game road swing with a 4 p.m. Tuesday matchup at Belmont. Next weekend, the Blue Raiders travel to No. 20 Florida Atlantic for a three-game series in Boca Raton, Florida.
Game One
Middle Tennessee scored all three runs in the third inning by posting five consecutive singles with two outs, including three straight RBI knocks up the middle.
Ronnie Jebavy began the rally with a single to left, and posted another multi-hit effort to lead the Blue Raiders at the plate. Jebavy moved to third on Jared Allen's single, which set up successful RBI opportunities for Michael Adkins (1-for-3), Jake Ingold (1-for-3) and Austin Bryant (1-for-2).
Nate Hoffmann only surrendered one hit on a bunt single and was excellent in his fourth start to earn his first Blue Raider win on the mound. Hoffmann tossed five shutout innings and recorded five strikeouts.
Kooper Kessler moved back to the bullpen and picked up his first save of the year in his first appearance since Feb. 22. Kessler struck out two and allowed one hit in two innings of work.
It was the second straight shutout over the Blazers as only three UAB runners reached second base.
After going 0-for-4, Dustin Delgado's reached-base streak was snapped at 30 games dating back to last season. The streak was the ninth longest since 1999.
UAB starter Johnny Lieske was dealt his first loss on the mound.
Game Two
UAB scored its first run of the series in the third, also its only lead of the weekend, but Middle Tennessee responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half.
Kevin Sullivan collected his first hit of the series on a single to right and Brad Jarreau followed with a hit. Then, Bryant produced his first of two sacrifice bunts to advance the runners. Jebavy came up next and was intentionally walked for the third time of the series. Allen finally came through with a sacrifice fly and Adkins followed with an RBI off an infield single, putting MT up 2-1.
The Blazers didn't go away though, pushing another run across and tying the game 2-2 after four innings.
In his first start of the season, Garrett Ring threw four innings, struck out two, walked two and allowed four hits. Sam Alton earned his second win in relief after holding the Blazers hitless through two-and-a-third. Nathan Foriest closed the door in the seventh for his third save.
Allen tripled off the wall in center to begin the sixth and Ingold registered an RBI after knocking Allen in on a groundout to make it 3-2. It was Ingold's third go-ahead RBI of the season.
Jarreau was MT's leading hitter after going 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored.
After being awarded first base twice via intentional walk, Jebavy's hit streak came to an end at 13 games. Bryant also made his first start at shortstop after Delgado was given rest.
