Jared Allen Collects HR no. 4
NASHVILLE - Middle Tennessee (11-7, 3-0 C-USA) suffered an 8-2 setback to Belmont (9-8, 2-0 OVC) Tuesday afternoon at Rose Park. Senior OF Jared Allen connected on his fourth home run and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Blue Raiders at the plate, but that was all MT could get going.
The Blue Raiders fell victim to a couple throwing errors and MT pitchers struggled, hitting six Bruin hitters and walking five.
Junior RHP Heath Slatton settled down after escaping a bases-loaded threat in the first and gave the Blue Raiders five innings of work. Slatton allowed a two-run homer and gave up three runs, but also showed bright spots to zone in and prevent more from scoring.
The right hander was saddled with the loss after recording three strikeouts and one walk.
Allen, who has six RBI over the previous four games, led off the second frame with his blast to right field to give the Blue Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Belmont tied it up in the third, and then BU Dom Veltri recorded a two-run shot in the fourth to give the Bruins the 3-1 lead. The home team went ahead for good after plating two more in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Only one Blue Raider reached third base when Austin Bryant (1-or-4) led off the eighth with a double and came around on Allen's sacrifice fly.
Seven Belmont pitchers limited Middle Tennessee to six hits, as Belmont scored its eight runs on just four hits. BU reliever Scott Moses picked up the win.
Middle Tennessee will return to conference play this weekend when it travels to No. 19 FAU. The Blue Raiders and Owls will play a three-game series kicking off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night.
