Blue Raiders Top UAB, 4-1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the second time in the 2015 campaign, the Middle Tennessee women's tennis team was able to play outside on their home courts, and did so with success.
The UAB Blazers entered play confidently after defeating Charlotte 4-3 yesterday.
Playing without Giulia Squadrin in the lineup for the first time this year, Coach Shelley Godwin's Blue Raiders picked up where they left off, dominating singles matches, playing well in doubles and ultimately taking a 4-1 win over UAB.
No. 65 Middle Tennessee improved to 15-3 overall with the victory.
The Blazers took the first point of the match as they won the doubles point. No. 3 doubles was first to finish, as Sarah Sediri and Jesse Grace took the win 8-6.
No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were close and intense the entire way. Both matches were tied at six-all at one point. At No. 1, Tiffany William and Darya Shulzhanok were defeated 8-7 (7-4), and a few moments later, UAB's No. 2 doubles pair defeated Nayara Moraes and Brittany Huxley 8-6.
Although Huxley was on the losing end of a doubles match, she showed off in singles play, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 finish and putting the Blue Raiders on the board. William continued her winning ways at the top spot of the lineup as she won 6-2, 6-2 to give MT a lead they would never relinquish.
Grace controlled the first set with ease, but struggled early in the second. She found her groove again and came out on top, 6-1, 6-2. Shulzhanok delivered the clinching point for the Blue Raiders with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
Sediri's match went unfinished with a score of 6-4, 2-3. Moraes was also unable to finish, but she was out in front 7-6 (8-6), 4-0 when the match was called.
Middle Tennessee extended its win streak to seven games and remained undefeated in eight home matches.
The women's tennis squad will have four consecutive road matches before returning home to face South Alabama in the regular season finale on April 10 at 2 PM. The Conference USA tournament will be held in Houston, Texas, and will take place on April 16-19.
