MT falls to Kent State in CIT
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team (19-17, 9-9 C-USA) dropped a 68-56 decision to Kent State in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament [CIT] on Wednesday night at Murphy Center.
Jacquez Rozier and Perrin Buford each scored 10 points to the lead the Blue Raiders in the scoring column. Rozier managed seven points in the second half and nearly registered a double-double in his final game with eight rebounds.
Rozier and Gavin Gibson wrap up their MT playing careers with 98 wins, the most by any class in program history.
"I would like to start by saying I really appreciate Chris Massaro, the administration and the people who really spent a lot of long hours over the last four days to make this game happen," said Head Coach Kermit Davis. "It means a lot to us and we didn't do our part."
Both teams came out shooting with a hot hand as each side drained five three's in the first half. The Blue Raiders started 3-of-3 from three-point range to go up 11-10 at the first media timeout.
The Raiders eventually built a six-point lead, going up 23-17 following a quick 8-0 spurt at the midway point of the half. However, the Flashes locked down the MT shooters and closed out the frame on a 14-2 run to go up 40-29 at the break.
Giddy Potts cut the KSU lead to single digits by hitting his first trey with just under 15 minutes left. Potts had an outstanding sequence that saw him block a KSU shot at the rim before knocking down the three at the other end. The Blue Raiders registered six blocks on the night.
MT kept chipping away at the lead as a D.J. Jones three trimmed the deficit to seven, 54-47, with 10:41 to go in regulation. That was the closest the Blue Raiders would get though, after the Flashes' lead swelled to 15 in the final minutes.
MT shot 36 percent for the game and finished 8-of-20 from beyond the arc. KSU was 44 percent from the floor and finished 39 percent from three-point range.
Jimmy Hall tallied a game-high 20 points and hauled in eight boards to lead the Flashes.
The game saw six lead changes as Kent State outscored Middle Tennessee 24-14 in the paint and 19-10 on second-chance points. Both teams grabbed 34 rebounds.
