MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (11-13, 1-8 C-USA) suffered a 5-0 setback to Florida Atlantic (24-7-1, 5-1 C-USA) in the series finale Sunday afternoon at FAU Softball Stadium.
Three different players led the offense with a pair of hits as junior Megan Griffith, senior Samantha Nieves and freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong all finished with two hits during the weekend.
FAU showcased why it boasts one of the best pitching staffs in the conference as MT hit just .172 over the weekend, its lowest this season.
Junior Kelci Cheney suffered the loss and fell to 6-8 on the season in her second straight start while putting in four innings of work and allowing four runs on four hits. Freshman Makenzie Prince came in for the final two innings and allowed three hits and a run. The two innings of work is the most this season for Prince.
Nieves posted a single while Birdsong tallied a hit as well, and sophomores Marinna Shadley and Austyn Whaley both notched hits
MT once again struggled to get anything going in the game against the Owls. Cheney held the FAU offense at bay for much of the early goings of the contest until the third inning when the Owls put up four on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI double and a three-run shot to right field by Laura Mann.
FAU tacked on one more run in the sixth inning to take a 5-0 advantage, and eventually went on to complete the sweep.
The Blue Raiders threatened just once in the game as they would get a baserunner on second when sophomore Lauren Riddell drew a walk before Shadley was hit by a pitch, but MT couldn't bring the runners home in the following at-bat.
Amanda Wilson registered the win for FAU inside the circle as she improves to 6-1 on the year. Wilson pitched four innings and allows four hits.
MT will look to get back on track on Wednesday with a midweek doubleheader against UT Martin at Blue Raider Softball Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
