MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball (21-29, 7-19) evened the series with FIU (33-17, 15-11 CUSA) in walk-off fashion, defeating the Panthers by a score of 7-6 in nine innings.
It was a slow start for the Blue Raider bats; Middle Tennessee falling behind early and beginning the game in a five-run deficit. The fourth inning is where the bats got hot for the Blue Raiders, Avery Wynne, Lexi Medlock, Lucie McDonald and Macie Harter all recording RBI for Middle Tennessee in a rally that would tie the ball game.
The tie was broken in the sixth inning, FIU sending a run across the plate in the top of the frame. The Blue Raiders had no answer in the bottom of the frame but had one more chance at the plate in the bottom of the seventh after holding the Panthers scoreless in the top of the inning. The bottom of the seventh inning at the plate began with a Blue Raider strikeout, but Harter followed up with a solo home run to keep Middle Tennessee alive.
The game continued scoreless after the seventh, but the tides turned in the favor of Middle Tennessee in the bottom of the ninth. Harter drew a leadoff walk that was followed up by a double off the bat of Jana Want to put runners on second and third with no outs for the Blue Raiders. Ansley Blevins stepped up to the plate to take an intentional four-pitch walk to load the bases for Onnika Spencer, who would drive the game-winning single through a gap in the infield to walk off the Panthers in the ninth inning.
Halle Klaiber got the start in the circle for the Blue Raiders, pitching three innings and striking out one before Tori Coffman entered the game in relief. Coffman had an excellent night in the circle, going the distance in her relief effort to pick up her fourth win of the season. The senior allowed just four hits and one earned run in her 6.0 innings of work on the night.
