Blue Raiders take down ISU in MT Shootout

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee opened the MT Shootout with a victory after defeating Illinois State 4-0 in the opening round match-up.
The Blue Raiders improved to 10-8 on the season with the victory and move on to play in the tournament semifinal tomorrow afternoon.
Ettore Zito and Dima Zhymantovich had control the entire time as they took the No. 3 doubles match 6-2 leading from start to finish.
The Redbirds fought back to tie doubles play up with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot over Yannick Born and Gian Issa.
It came down to Ben Davis and Victor Hoang at the No. 1 doubles position to declare the doubles point as the two went down early but battled back to take a 5-3 lead. The duo would seal the doubles point, finishing ISU off 6-4.
Singles play kicked off with every match in a competitive, except for Robin Riethmueller who jumped to a quick 6-0 first set victory at the No. 6 spot. Riethmueller continued at pace to grab a clean sweep with a 6-0 win in the second set to put MT up 2-0.
With the win Riethmueller moves to 11-3 in singles action this season.
Zito took control on the top court with a straight set victory 6-2, 6-2 over Illinois Stat's Jakub Eisner to propel the Blue Raiders to a 3-0 lead.
The remaining singles matches were a constant back and forth battle with Davis finally gaining the edge to seal the victory for the Blue Raiders with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 2 court.
Born, Issa and Zymantovich would go unfinished despite Born holding a 6-4, 6-5 lead at the No. 3 and Issa up 6-2, 6-5 on the fourth court.
Zymantovich jumped off to a strong 6-2 win in the first set, but fell 4-6 in the second. When the match was clinched for the Blue Raiders he was down 4-3 in the third set.
The win gives MT its ninth victory when playing at home.
Middle Tennessee will face conference foe Old Dominion tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the indoor facility at Nashboro Village. The Monarchs are ranked 61st nationally and are 11-1 on the season. ODU is currently riding a four-match win streak.
