Blue Raiders Fall to APSU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee fell behind early and was not able to rally in an 11-0 setback against Austin Peay in front of 749 at Reese Smith Jr. Field Tuesday.
The Blue Raiders (16-11) could never get their bats going against Austin Peay starter Jared Carkuff, who is a member of the Governors' weekend rotation but earned Tuesday's start after a short stint in his outing last Saturday.
Carkuff scattered three hits over seven inning before giving way to the bullpen to earn the win for Austin Peay (15-10). Middle Tennessee finished with four hits.
Ronnie Jebavy continued to swing a hot bat for the Blue Raiders. He was 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Michael Adkins (1-for-3), Austin Norrell (1-for-3) and Will Schnure (1-for-1) also had base knocks for Middle Tennessee.
The game was the first of the season for newcomer Norrell, who has been rehabbing a hip injury. He collected his first collegiate hit and carries a bat that bolsters what has been a strong lineup this season.
Middle Tennessee continued its midweek struggles, falling to 0-6 in such games. Austin Peay, on the other hand, won for the first time in six midweek games.
"We really don't have an answer for (why we haven't won a midweek game) but we need to figure it out quickly," Jebavvy said. "There is really no excuse for us not being able to at least put a run on the board. It's pretty frustrating."
Jebavvy continues to be a bright spot for the Blue Raiders.
"He may even be doing more than what I thought he would do," Middle Tennessee skipper Jim McGuire said. "I didn't think he would be hitting in the three-hole, but he's been outstanding and has drawn a lot of pro interest too. Scouts are coming out of the woodwork to see what he's all about."
The bright spots were few Tuesday as Middle Tennessee never could put pressure on the Governors from an offensive standpoint.
"I don't understand how it keeps happening (in the midweek games," McGuire said. "We just fell behind early again, and once we've fallen behind in midweek games we get into a funk and just cannot get anything going offensively."
The Governors jumped on starter Tyler Troutt for four runs, all earned in one inning of work and went on to stake claim to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Six Blue Raider pitchers toed the mound. None lasted more than two innings.
McGuire indicated his staff went into the game planning to use as many pitchers as necessary since the Austin Peay game was the only midweek contest this week.
"With just one midweek game we decided that we were just going to keep going from pitcher to pitcher if we had to," McGuire said. "Facing a weekend starter, I knew that we had to try and keep it close so everybody was on a short lease tonight."
Middle Tennessee will put is C-USA lead on the line when it faces No. 13 Rice in Houston this weekend. Jonathan Frebis will earn the start for the Blue Raiders in Friday night's series opener.
