Blue Raiders Roll Past FIU, 79-30
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's basketball team (19-8, 13-4 C-USA) bounced back in a big way with a 79-30 dispatching of FIU Thursday in front of 3,605 inside the Murphy Center.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders are just one win shy of their 12th straight season with at least 20 wins.
MT held FIU (3-24, 0-17 C-USA) to a season-low 30 points and 23.4 percent shooting from the floor while displaying excellent pressure on defense, suffocating the Panthers into 29 turnovers and turning the miscues into 36 points.
It's the fourth time this season MT has held an opponent to its season low in scoring.
Ten different players scored for MT, led by sophomore Olivia Jones' game-high 21 points and corralled 10 boards for her 10th double-double of the season. Jones also dished out five assists with three steals.
Sophomore Ty Petty tied her career high with 20 points on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting with four boards and two assists. The tandem of Jones and Petty went on to outscore the Panthers by themselves, 41-30.
Freshman Rebecca Reuter tallied a career-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting with four rebounds.
The Blue Raiders sprung out to a 15-2 start in the first 3:55 of the contest after Brea Edwards canned a trifecta to give MT a 6-for-9 start from the field, while forcing FIU to either commit a turnover or a missed field goal on its first seven possessions.
FIU would cut the lead to five, 15-10, with 13:23 left in the first after an 8-0 run, but the Blue Raiders outscored the Panthers 26-5 the rest of the way to go into the locker room with a 41-15 lead.
MT's defense was all over the court as FIU missed 10 straight shots going into the break and had16 turnovers. The Blue Raiders took advantage of FIU's miscues, scoring 18 points off turnovers while also firing up 10 fast break points in the first half.
The Blue Raiders kept the foot on the gas pedal in the second half, surging to a 46-point lead at 76-30, with 2:57 left in the contest after a China Dow layup. At one point, MT endured a 43-9 run going back to the first half.
Junior guard Caroline Warden chipped in with seven points and sophomore China Dow added to the victory with six points and six boards. Freshman Abbey Sissom tallied five points while senior Shanice Cason, junior Brea Edwards and freshman Gabby Lyon all scored as well. Cason finished with four assists and no turnovers and pulled five rebounds.
MT will look to close out the regular season with a victory as Florida Atlantic will visit the Murphy Center for a 10:30 a.m., tip-off on Saturday for Senior Day, marking the final home game for Cason, MacKenzie Sells and manager Ashlynn Trotter.
