Texarkana CC hosting 2015 tourney
TEXARKANA, TEXAS – Middle Tennessee will begin competition at the 2015 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at Texarkana Country Club.
The championship is April 26-29, with a practice round scheduled for Saturday, April 25. Conference USA is set to become the first NCAA Division I conference to include match play, reflecting the NCAA format, as part of its men's golf league championship.
The 13 member schools will play 54 holes of stroke play (April 26-28) on the par 72, 6,935-yard course, with the top four teams advancing to a four-team seeded match play playoff to be conducted Wednesday, April 29. The winning team earns the league's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. This will be the sixth year Texarkana has played host to the men's championship.
The Blue Raiders finished fifth in last year's tournament held in Edmond, OK but were only eight shots back of overall winner Rice. UAB is ranked 33rd nationally and will be the favorite at this week's tourney.
"We have practiced and played a lot since our last tournament and I am confident we will be ready to play," said Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "Conference championships are always exciting so we look forward to getting down there and competing."
The Blue Raider lineup will include seniors Payne Denman and Brett Patterson, sophomore Drake Duncan, and freshmen Hoyeong Kim and Connor Smith.
Denman, who tied for 15th at last year's event, leads the team with a 73.3 stroke average and owns 10 rounds of par or better.
Patterson, a three-time all-conference performer and U.S. Open participant, will be playing his final collegiate conference championship this week. Patterson, who owns a 73.8 career stroke average, tied for 15th in last year's tournament.
Duncan, Kim and Smith will all be playing in their first conference championship. Duncan is second on the team with a 75.2 stroke average, while Kim ranks third and Smith fourth.
